ABOUT
The nursery is situated in the heart of the Kzn Midlands SA, where we experience mild summers and cold and frosty winters. The nursery was started 15 years ago by Gaye Simmons as a ‘rescue haven’ for these precious and beautiful plants. I,’the daughter’ Robyn, was taken under her wing and started the commercialization process 9 years ago and now these wonderful plants are available to you the gardeners!
Our indigenous bulbs are the ‘jewels’ in the garden, they surprise and delight even the not so keen gardener! Most of them are extremely hardy and for very little care one is rewarded with splashes of colour and unlike exotic bulbs they do not need to be lifted for the winter rest period.
Our product range includes a wide selection of Indigenous South African bulbs, which occur in the summer rainfall zone. Most of our summer rainfall bulbs do well in the winter rainfall zones in SA due to the difference in soil types. Free advice is given to ensure your bulbs give you the joy you deserve!
We have just launched our Best African Bulb Gift box, which will be available from selected retail outlets from mid November.
We have 5 permanent people employed by us, Anna, Mavis, Bongani, Msiswe and Nkosnathi. Our staff members are being continually trained in the various aspects of the nursery and life skills. They are also learning to communicate in English and at the same time bettering our Zulu. They play a vital role in forwarding our business and are rewarded on a commission based performance.
FARMING PRACTICES
I firmly believe that we are the keepers of our soils for future generations and that by using non toxic farming practices we keep our soils healthy and our bulbs happy!! In order to achieve healthy soils we collect tons of other farmers bio‘waste’ annually. This we compost and use as mulch. We also follow the Effective Micro-organism practice to keep the ‘bad bugs’ under control.
Mulching is vital to keeping weeds under control and keeps plenty of earthworms very busy and well fed!
